Congratulations to Xcel Energy on 25 years of volunteerism

April is National Volunteer Month, and we’re taking the opportunity to thank all Meals on Wheels volunteers for making the delivery of more than 1 million meals per year possible. It also happens that one of the longest-standing providers of volunteers for Meals on Wheels programs is celebrating 25 years of volunteerism.

Xcel Energy has a long history of support for Meals on Wheels, with employees helping in a variety of capacities over the last quarter-century. The numbers tell the story well:

  • 500 volunteers who have delivered a meal or participated in another volunteer activity
  • 135,000 volunteer hours donated by Xcel employees
  • 525,000 meals delivered by Xcel volunteers

Workplace Delivery Teams like those run by Xcel volunteers provide a huge boost to the volunteer force of Meals on Wheels programs. Teams like theirs are able to cover entire meal delivery routes each day, providing extra certainty that there will be enough volunteers to cover all the shifts needed to serve more than 4,000 recipients per day.

Xcel volunteers are also involved with more than just meal delivery. The company regularly sends volunteers to help with our annual Blizzard Box Blitz and often hosts their own events to benefit and promote awareness about Meals on Wheels.

“We can say that every day, someone from Xcel Energy is helping a senior or person with a disability stay in their own home,” says Patrick Rowan, Metro Meals on Wheels executive director. “Over the past 25 years, Xcel Energy volunteers have delivered thousands of meals, while current and former Xcel employees have helped shape Meals on Wheels by serving on boards and planning committees. We are so thankful for the unwavering support of volunteers from Xcel Energy!”
