Let’s Blitz: How you can help us bring emergency meals to recipients

Boxes of food being sent during a blizzardEach year around Halloween, a group of Meals on Wheels volunteers comes together to pack thousands of shelf-stable meals for meal recipients. While Meals on Wheels offers the delivery of fresh, nutritious meals daily, these shelf-stable meals called Blizzard Boxes are meant to be stored away so all meal recipients have an emergency meal when Minnesota’s winter brings its fiercest weather.

During the Blizzard Box Blitz on Wednesday, Oct. 28, Meals on Wheels volunteers will pack more than 4,500 boxes containing two meals a piece. Volunteers work feverishly on an assembly line in the morning and afternoon shifts and at the end of the day, the boxes are ready to be distributed to Meals on Wheels delivery sites throughout the metro area.

This year, we’re also asking for help from our volunteers to get the boxes from the packing site at Second Harvest Heartland in Golden Valley to our meal delivery sites. We’re looking for a handful of volunteers who can deliver boxes during the day Thursday, Oct. 29.
