New to the Menu: Traditional Mexican Meals
We’re excited to share that traditional Mexican meals are now available for Meals on Wheels recipients in the Twin Cities. Thanks to a partnership with Salsa a la Salsa, meal recipients can choose from a rotating menu of traditional Mexican favorites from the restaurant that has operated in Minneapolis since 2003.
The meals offered as part of this menu include tamales, enchiladas and burritos with authentic Mexican salsas and spices. Salsa a la Salsa operates a restaurant and catering business out of the Midtown Global Market and has experience providing meals to older adults in the Twin Cities through congregate dining programs.
The traditional Mexican menu joins a broader menu of Latino-inspired meals offered by Meals on Wheels through our kitchen partnership with Open Arms of Minnesota. Two thirds of Latino Minnesotans trace their heritage to Mexico. This new Mexican menu is part of our effort to bring food that is both familiar and tasty to all Twin Cities seniors.
We added traditional Halal and Hmong menus earlier this year through new community partnerships. Asian Flame Catering is providing Hmong meals such as Beef Chow Fun and Steamed Catfish Soup and Oasis Mediterranean Grill is providing East African-inspired Halal dishes.
All cultural meal options are available through our website. We have staff who are fluent in English, Hmong and Spanish who can answer questions and help with enrollment over the phone at 612-623-3363. And our website and print materials have been translated into Spanish, Somali and Hmong.
Join us at Fiesta Latina
Each September, Communidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio (CLUES) hosts Fiesta Latina to celebrate Latino heritage and culture. Meals on Wheels will be there on Saturday, Sept. 14 for this year’s event. The festivities kick off Latino Heritage Month, which is celebrated Sept. 15-Oct. 15.
Fiesta Latina is a family-friendly celebration that features live music, traditional dances, healthy Latino food, arts and crafts activities, plus door prizes and giveaways for attendees. We’ll be among many other organizations offering information on community resources. Those who stop by our booth will have the chance to play our Plinko game and take home fun prizes from Meals on Wheels.
